Fiat Doblo 2001 -2010

  • Practical and spacious interior
  • Decent ride
  • Rear sliding doors

The Fiat Doblo first hit the market in 2001, with a similar van-derived approach to practical “family cars” as the Citreon Berlingo and Renault Kangoo.

Being tall and boxy means, the Doblo isn’t the prettiest car on the road and certainly doesn’t have a sporty look. However, the lack of aesthetics is made up for with enormous load capacity and ample cabin space for several adults to travel comfortably.

Practicality

Designed for practicality, the Fiat Doblo 2001-2010 offers plenty of smart features to help with the day-to-day.

A sliding door mechanism ensures that entering and leaving the vehicle is effortless, even in the tightest of parking spots. It also makes loading the larger items much less of a struggle.

The Doblo also has a high-opening tailgate which provides a massive square opening to the boot of the car. In terms of storage space, the five-seater models can store up to 790 litres with the rear seats in place, or 3,200 litres when they are down. However, the seven-seaters have far less boot space, and with the two rear seats being on a bench they only fold forward, so they still get in the way.

Comfort

Behind the wheel, the Fiat Doblo feels almost car-like, with excellent visibility of the road and a reasonably comfortable seating position. There is a fair amount of noise caused by the cars boxy dimensions and somewhat loud engines (especially at higher revs).

The interior has an upmarket feel compared to the Berlingo or Kangoo. However, quality on the earlier version isn’t nearly as good as models released after the 2006 facelift.

Passengers will be comfortable, whether in the front or back, with plenty of headroom for everybody. The Seven-seater models suffer a little in terms of legroom, and the rearmost seats aren’t very comfortable on longer journeys.

Safety

With a three-star NCAP rating for adult occupant protection and driver protection, the Doblo is ranked quite low compared to alternatives like the Berlingo.

The earlier models only had ABS, with electronic brakeforce distribution being an optional extra.

All models come with:

  • Driver Airbag
  • Passenger’s airbag
  • PAS (Power-assisted steering)

Engine Efficiency

The Doblo is a reliable car, with few gadgets to go wrong and reasonably priced parts servicing and repairs on the off chance something does happen.

All models are excellent when it comes to fuel efficiency and general economy driving. Engine sizes vary between 1.2L, 1.3L and 1.9L versions.

Earlier models had the option between the 65bph 1.2-litre petrol and 63bph 1.9-litre diesel. Both lack power and struggle to get to a sensible driving speed, roughly 20.9s to get to 62mph. The maximum speed they can reach is 88mph.

In 2002 Fiat released a new 100bph 1.9-litre JTD diesel, which was soon replaced by a slightly more powerful 105pbh version. The new engine was a massive improvement to the originals with being able to do 49mpg and go from 0-62mph in 12.4 seconds.

During the same timeframe, a 70bph 1.3-litre MultiJet engine was introduced to replace the original 1.9D model. Though not the quickest at 16 seconds to reach 62mph, it was very fugal with 51mpg achievable.

Our option about the Fiat Doblo 2001-2010

With a van-like appearance, the Fiat Doblo 2001-2010 models feel quite sophisticated to drive, though it’s not the most rewarding to drive. The steering lacks weight but still feels responsive enough for a relaxing ride. Overall, the Doblo performs well on rough roads and at higher speeds. The drive is comfortable, and the exceptional amount of boot space in the five-seater versions is hard to overlook.

Great quality of build for the actual kit (Vario) Great support, Sam (Evesham branch) was extremely helpful and supportive all the way through initial viewing which helped me select the appropriate package for my needs, actual installation and making sure that I fully understood packing/unpacking of kit between camping trips. Sam answered all my questions thoroughly and provided me with extra info and advice which will greatly benefit me. Highly recommended, thanks again.

These people are awesome! I broke a tent pole on my Kampa Tailgater on my first camping trip last weekend. Though I never bought this tent from them (and they do stock them), they were so helpful over the phone when I rang them to ask for some help with it. They said they carried spare poles for many tents and would call me back as soon asthey located one. They did within the hour. Next day I visited their showroom and store and what a welcome. I was offered a coffee whilst I walked around their huge display of awnings and camping furniture. Also looked at many micro-campers they had on show. The owners, Jason and Rachael couldn’t have been more attentive if they tried. I was shown the shop and WOW! It is stocked over two floors with everything you could possibly need for your camping adventures. I can honestly say it was the best camping shop I have ever visited in all my years. Jason then gave me 4 poles of varying lengths to meet my needs and thoughtfully also one with the base ferrule for attaching to the tent in the event that one broke. All for a tenner! I said I’ll be back for anything I need, however Rachael also advised me that they have their online store and happy to ship goods too and send out lots of deliveries daily. I really was very impressed with their setup, their displays and their stock, but most of all, their fantastic attitude and helpfulness.Great people to do business with.

Very helpful and lovely to chat to. Nothing was to much trouble even suggesting to us to take van and they would make sure that whatever awning we picked fitted and explained to us other things. Would recommend to anyone.

So so good. Been several times to Three Legged Cross and have always received helpful, friendly and very caring support. Thank you to both of you, you are both stars especially to those buying camping fridges! If you look really unhappy they have ice creams and dear Franco the dog to pet and look after you. Great selection of tents, awnings and every other camping device under the sun at good prices.

Fantastic conversion and support. I got the new style conversion - Solo plus and it’s a dream. Storage space plus I can add seats in or out ( or leave them in). Such a clever design. Plenty of room under bed to store things and space by side door next to cupboard to get in and out or put my little porta loo at night .
