- Immensely practical
- Cheap to run,
- Sliding rear doors,
- Funky image
The Fiat Qubo is a small, five-person, people carrier that makes a point of focusing on being family-friendly and practical.
Like many family cars in this class of vehicle, the Fiat Qubo is has a van-like design similar to its sibling commercial vehicle the Fiat Fiorino. However, several changes to the interior and body have transformed this car into a somewhat sophisticated family-vehicle.
Fiat Qubo Interior
A boot capable of storing 330-litres when the rear seats are up, or 2,500-litres when taken out provides plenty of storage for travelling, working or the general nic nacs of family life.
The front passenger and driver also get ample storage spaces with a glove box that’s deep enough for a small-medium sized laptop.
Rear passenger doors use a sliding mechanism which makes entering and exiting the car effortless. It will also come in handy when loading the vehicle with larger goods.
Comfort
Being a fairly big car, the Fiat Qubo offers plenty of leg and headroom for all passengers and can easily accommodate four adults, five at a squeeze.
The driver controls are easy to use being stocky to the touch and positioned intuitively on the dashboard. Much of the cabin uses hard-touch materials which given its affordable price isn’t a surprise.
- Air conditioning is an extra except on the Dynamic model.
- Electric front windows are standard on all models.
- Electronically adjustable door mirrors are an option on the Active model.
Safety
With a three-star NCAP rating, the Fiat Qubo is on-par with similarly sized people carriers with its safety features consisting of:
- Twin front airbags
- Side airbags in the front seats
- Seatbelt reminders
- Seatbelt pre-tensioners
- ISOFIX child mounting points on the outer rear seats.
Fiat Qubo Drive
Despite the van-based design of the Qubo, it shares many similarities with a small hatchback which makes it ideal for anyone looking to move to a larger family car.
The stature of this vehicle provides fantastic visibility of the road. However, the bulky windscreen pillars and large wing-mirrors create a blind-spot particularly noticeable when approaching roundabouts. Wind-noise is also a bit of a problem for the Qubo, a problem also caused by the door mirrors.
There is some lean while going around sharp bends; however, it feels firmly clasped to the road. With a short-wheelbase, uneven road surfaces can seem a little challenging for the small people carrier; but in general, the drive is comfortable and quite relaxing.
Engine Efficiency
Thanks to the economic engines, all models of Qubo are cost-effective. You’re unlikely to spend much on keeping the Qubo running, with an extended service interval of roughly 20,000 miles and tried and tested parts from many popular Fiat cars. Diesel versions are also cheap to tax.
The petrol engine is a 1.4-litre with 77bhp. It can go 0-62mph in a somewhat daunting 16 seconds and can get 40.9mpg while producing 161g/km of CO2 emissions.
As a better option, the 1.3-litre diesel gets a much more respectable 63mpg with 107g/km of CO2 emissions. It suffers a little in terms of power, standing in with 75phb and a 0-62 in over 16.5 seconds.
Both petrol and diesel use a 5-speed manual gearbox. However, the diesel also has the options of a sequential gearbox that Fiat calls Dualogic.
Despite its lack of power, the diesel feels quite nippy on the road and is the engine we’d suggest choosing.
