Volkswagen Caddy Maxi Life
- High-quality cabin
- Spacious interior
- Seven-Seater
- Rear sliding doors
The Caddy Maxi Life is the seven-seater, van-derived people carrier from Volkswagen. With its excellent reputation for quality and a refined ride, the Caddy Maxi Life is a strong alternative to traditional people carriers.
Safety
With safety being a priority, the Caddy is an excellent choice because it’s brimming with equipment to keep you out of harm’s way. The features that come as standard include:
- Electronic Stabilisation Programme (ESP)
- Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), traction control
- Automatic hazard lights activation under emergency braking
- Driver and front passenger airbags
- Front side airbags
- An electronic differential lock.
Practicality
Practicality is crucial, and the Caddy Maxi Life fares well with a generous number of storage spaces and flexibility for seating and loading arrangements. There are a couple of cubbies in the centre console for cans or small bottles. And for those of you that prefer a map to a sat-nav, you’re in luck because there’s an overhead space perfectly suited to storing your map.
To the rear of the Caddy Maxi Life, there’s an ample amount of room when all the seats are in place. Then with the third row of seats removed the luggage space amounts to 1.6 metres cubed which expands to 3.9 metres cubed with the second row of seats folded away.
Interior
The Caddy Maxi Lifes interior is very similar to its van sibling from which it’s derived; which is great because the Caddys interior is of good quality. And the plastics are hard-wearing; a bonus for families who use this type of vehicle. With the dashboard resembling that of VW cars, it’s layout ensures all controls are within easy reach of the driver.
The interior space is ample, with plenty of head and legroom. However, passengers in the third row of seats will have a limited view of the road. But there are more than enough windows to allow a view of the journey and let enough light into the Maxi. The front seats are well-bolstered and give good support when on long trips.
The Drive
Road noise is not overly intrusive, which for a van-derived vehicle is quite the achievement. In terms of fuel consumption, the best Caddy will average 55.4mpg and give around 735 miles on one tank. Which, for a seven-seater mid-sized MPV is a cracking statistic.
The Caddy Maxi Life comes in one of four engine variants. There are two versions with a 1.6-litre TDI engine and two versions with 2.0TDI engines. Whichever option you choose comes with a five-speed manual gearbox, but a seven-speed DSG ‘box is also available.
It’s almost got car-like handling that is sure to be well-loved by families who the need the extra room that this vehicle offers. And the suspension is borrowed from the Golf/Touran platform, so this Caddy deals with corners pretty well.
Our Thoughts of the Volkswagen Caddy Maxi Life
You wouldn’t know the Maxi life is a derivative of a commercial vehicle. It feels nimble, and although there is a little body roll when cornering, it is a well set up vehicle.
The Caddy proved a reliable performer and the Maxi Life is no different.
